House Bill 76 (HB76)

In 2019, the Cody Stephens Foundation helped lead the successful passage of House Bill 76 (HB76) in Texas.

This important legislation was created to protect young athletes from Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) by increasing awareness and encouraging voluntary heart screenings.

What HB76 Does:

Requires schools to provide parents and students information about the risks of SCA.

Offers student-athletes and their families the opportunity to request an electrocardiogram (ECG) in addition to the standard pre-participation sports physical.

Empowers families to make informed decisions about their child's heart health.

Why Legislation Matters

For years, cardiac screenings weren’t discussed during routine sports physicals — leaving many heart conditions hidden until tragedy struck.

Thanks to HB76, families now have access to life-saving information and tools to detect risks early. Since the passing of HB76, thousands of students across Texas have been screened — and lives have been saved because of early detection.
